While not exactly a ski town, Port Henry is centrally located to several ski resorts in New York and Vermont -- you can get to any of these in roughly an hour thanks to the nearby bridge connecting New York and Vermont. So hop in your car a little after 7 in the morning and be on the slopes when they open.  And feel free to store your skis, boots and other equipment in Edgemont's carriage house.

New York:

Gore Mountain.  www.goremountain.com (Arguably one of the more under-estimated ski resorts in the Eastern United States).

Whiteface Mountain ("the Olympic Mountain").  www.whiteface.com

Mad River Glen ("Ski it if you can"; the center of telemark skiing in Eastern United States).  www.madriverglen.com

Sugarbush.  www.Sugarbush.com. Classic Vermont downhill skiing, a few miles past Mad River Glen heading East.
